SA-2 “GUIDELINE” - A mainstay of Iraq’s Air Defence Command (which was part of the Iraqi Army prior to becoming a separate service in 1993), the SA-2 had seen 28 years of service by the time
Desert Storm commenced. Used extensively during the Iran–Iraq War, the “Guideline” still posed a serious threat to Coalition aircraft despite its age. Indeed, a handful of aircraft were downed by improved SA-2Es, including a Tomcat that was hit by a locally developed optically guided weapon. The missile is depicted here on its standard SM-90 launcher.
