RF-101A 54-1510, 31st Tactical Reconnaissance Training Squadron, Shaw AFB, South Carolina - The 17th and 18th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadrons of the 363rd Tactical Reconnaissance Wing (TRW) at Shaw AFB, South Carolina, replaced Republic RF-84F Thunderflashes with RF-101As from May 1957. Only 35 RF-101As were built and most of them began their service career at Shaw, although they originally lacked much of the specialised equipment for their role and were quickly replaced in the frontline units by RF-101Cs. RF-101A 54-1510 passed to the 4414th Combat Crew Training Squadron (CCTS), also at Shaw, which became operational in June 1959, responsible for training Voodoo pilots. In early 1966, the aircraft was painted in a non-standard black and dark green camouflage, with a large star and bar on the front fuselage, but by 1968 it had received the three-tone southeast Asia scheme. The role and equipment of the 4414th CCTS passed to the 31st Tactical Reconnaissance Training Squadron in August 1969 and its Voodoos were painted with the unit's red and black checkered markings on the fin top. The 13 surviving RF-101As at Shaw, including 54-1510, left in mid- February 1971 for the 171st TRS of the Michigan Air National Guard at Selfridge AFB/ANGB to replace its RF-84Fs. During the summer of 1972, the unit received F-106A/B Delta Darts and became an interceptor squadron. That May, RF-101A 54-1510 entered storage at Davis-Monthan AFB, Arizona, from where it was sold as scrap in April 1977.
