| North American YF-93 |
The YF-93 was North American’s late entry for the penetration fighter contest. Although based on the F-86, it was a radically different aircraft with a much higher take-off weight, wider fuselage, larger wing area, intakes submerged into the fuselage underneath the cockpit, and the more powerful Pratt & Whitney J48 engine. Originally designated the F-86C, when the USAF placed its order for two prototypes in December 1947 they were redesignated as the YF-93A. Six months later, an order for 118 aircraft was placed, but the entire contest was cancelled before any of the production aircraft could be completed. The two prototypes (48-317 and 48-318) were constructed but they ended serving with the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, where they had conventional intakes instead.
