When the first XP-88 prototype proved underpowered, the decision was taken to equip the second with J34-22 engines that had primitive afterburners. Although this shortened the range – because of higher fuel consumption – a similar modification was also undertaken on the first XF- 88. Eventually, the USAF picked this type over the Lockheed XF-90 and North American YF-93 and planned to place an order for a Westinghouse J46- powered variant. However, combat experience from Korea and the flight performance of the B-47 proved that penetration fighters were unnecessary and the project was cancelled. Nevertheless, McDonnell continued work on two XP-88s and their revised design eventually became the F-101 Voodoo. (Artwork by Goran Sudar)
