Planned to become an escort fighter, the XP-83 was also to correct the P-59’s problems with the low fuel load and short range. While based on the P-59 design, it had a pressurised cockpit. However, the performance in terms of the lack of power and directional instability, was disappointing, especially in comparison to the P-80, and the project was cancelled. The first prototype thus ended as a testbed for ramjet engines, and crashed in 1946, while the second was flown in October 1946, but then scrapped only a few months later. (Artwork by Goran Sudar)
