Although the USAF was lukewarm about purchasing an upgraded variant, the F- 94C was modified extensively enough to be given the designation F-97. It included a completely new, much thinner wing, along with swept tail surfaces, the Pratt & Whitney J48 engine (a licence version of the Rolls-Royce Tay), and an upgraded E-5 weapons system including an AN/APG-40 radar. The guns were removed and replaced by all-rocket armament consisting of four groups of six rockets installed in a ring around the nose. The only variant officially named Starfire, 387 were manufactured. (Artwork by Goran Sudar)
