The Bell P-80A was a major improvement over any jets available in the USA by 1945. Its streamlined design and the reliable and relatively powerful General Electric I-40 engine (based on a donated British Goblin) enabled it to see a little action during the last few weeks of the Second World War and it would go on to see more during the Korean War, where it demonstrated its effectiveness as a ground-attack aircraft. This P-80A (serial number 44-85275) was assigned to Lieutenant Colonel William D Ritchie, commanding officer of the 61st Fighter Squadron, 56th Fighter Group, home-based at Selfridge AFB.
