In addition to 20 P-59As, 30 P-59Bs were also constructed (serial numbers were 44-22629 to 44-22658), these had an extra fuel tank in their outer wing panels. Most served with the 412th Fighter Group where they were used to familiarise USAAF pilots with the handling and performance characteristics of jet aircraft. Three, including this example, were handed over to the US Navy, which test-flew them at the Naval Air Test Center (NATC) at NAS Patuxent River. Although receiving the designation YF2L-1, they quickly proved unsuitable for carrier operations and were operated only for a few months. (Artwork by Jean-Marie Guillou)
