| Dassault Mirage 5 |
In 1972, the ADDF’s Air Wing was expanded into the Abu Dhabi Air Force. Following an evaluation of a number of competitive multi-role fighters – including the BAe Harrier and the Northrop F-5E Tiger II – the Abu Dhabi Air Force opted for the Dassault Mirage 5. Initial order included 12 Mirage 5AD fighter-bombers, 2 two-seat Mirage 5DAD conversion-trainers (serials 201 and 203), and two Mirage 5RAD reconnaissance fighters (serials 601 and 603). Delivered in 1974-1975, they were all operated by Pakistani personnel of the II Shaheen Squadron from Abu Dhabi’s Al Bateen Airport, then Al Dhafra Air Base. A follow-up order in 1974 added 14 Mirage 5EAD interceptors (serials 501-5014), one of which is shown here in its original camouflage pattern and markings: the former consisted of French colours Brun Café and Kaki on top surfaces and sides, and Gris Bleu Clair on under surfaces. Inset is shown the badge of the Union Air Force. The scroll on the badge states Union Air Force. (Artwork by Tom Cooper)
