Sadly, there are no photographs of the RB-47H serial number 53-4281 left. This reconstruction was prepared with assistance from Robert Hopkins III, an acknowledged military aviation historian. Nicknamed ‘The Little Toy Dog’, this jet was assigned to the 55th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing when intercepted and shot down by a MiG-19 flown by Captain Vasyli Polyakov from the 174th Guards Interceptor Aviation Regiment, PVO, over the Bering Sea off Cape Svyatov Nos, on 1 July 1960. As of the time, The Little Toy Dog had an early version of the AN/ALD-4 ELINT-gathering system installed under Project Silver King. This included a lower number of antennas on the rear fuselage, and a large pod later installed low on the right side of the centre fuselage. Similarly, while many RB-47Hs of the 55th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing had the front doors of their undercarriage painted in red, and the ‘last three’ of their serial applied there in white, this was not yet the case with this example as of July 1960.
