The Universal Carrier, also known as the Bren Gun Carrier was the most produced armoured fighting vehicle in history. It was powered by a Ford V-8 petrol engine that generated 85hp at 3,500 rpm and had a top speed of 48 k/ph. Initially issued to motor cavalry regiments in North Africa as troop carriers during the Battle of Ghazala (1942), the Vickers Carriers had a more useful role with the Indian reconnaissance regiments during the Italian Campaign. In the early years of the Pakistan Army it was used as a mortar carrier and for the basic training of tank crews. (Artwork by David Bocquelet)
