On 18 November 1952, at least four MiG-15s of the PVO clashed with two F9 Panthers of VF-781, flying a combat air patrol over USS Oriskany (CVA- 34). Flying F9F-5 BuNo 125459/D106, Lieutenant Royce Williams claimed three MiGs as shot down. His wingman, Lieutenant Junior Grade David Rowlands, flew F9F-5 BuNo 126034/D109, but scored no kills, while Lieutenant Junior Grade John Middleton flew F9F-5 BuNo 126969/D114 and was credited with one kill (although, probably, scoring none). The main artwork shows Williams’ F9F-5 at the time of that clash: the jet returned for a safe landing on Oriskany but was subsequently written off due to combat damage and dumped into the sea. Middleton’s F9F-5, shown inset, thus became the only one known to have worn kill markings, even though latest research indicates that he shot down no MiGs. (Artworks by Tom Cooper)
