Following the successful performance of 10th Armoured Brigade’s T-72s early in the war, Iraq placed orders for 250 T-72M1s in Poland, followed by up to 1,000 additional T-72Ms and T-72M1s imported from Czechoslovakia and the USSR. Many went into battle in the mid-1980s still wearing olive green overall, as on delivery. Yellow sand (often bleached into light grey by sun and sand) was crudely applied on some examples, as illustrated here, before the entire fleet was later repainted in that colour.
