The Mistel 1 combination comprised a Ju 888-4 with a Bf 190F-4. This example was used on Operation Familientag (family day) to attack Allied shipping in the bay of the Seine off Normandy on 24 June 1944, the first combat use of the Mistel. Some of the combinations were shot down by Mosquito night fighters, but one Mistel struck the frigate HMS Nith, which was being used as an HQ ship, severely damaging it and killing ten crew members.
