On the night of 7 Feb 1943, Do 217E-4 Wr Nr. 5315 flew a minelaying sortie off the south coast of England, dropping mines near St. Catherine's Point on the Isle of Wight. For some reason, possibly engine failure, it flew inland over the island, dropped amine near a farmhouse which injured several occupants and went on to crash on farmland near Ventnor. Pilot Feldwebel Rudolf Salz and his three crew were killed.
