Aiming to further improve its services, in early 1971, the Aerotransportes Entre Rios – meanwhile in the process of being reorganised as the Transporte Aéreo Rioplatense – leased its first CL-44D4 Yukon from Batch Air: the aircraft with construction number 34, and the US registration N605SA. Nicknamed the Swingtail, the CL-44D4 was unique in having its entire tail section hinged: this could be opened using hydraulic actuators to load large items quickly. An inflatable seal at the hinge-break enabled the maintenance of the cabin pressure, and eight hydraulic-operated locks ascertained structural integrity. In service with the TAR, this aircraft received the registration LV-JTN. Usually, the ‘Juliet Tango November’ had the Argentine flag and title ´Argentina´ applied high on its fin: when it became involved in Operation Seashell, these were removed (or covered), as shown in insert.
