Based on Bristol Britannia, the Canadair CL-44 was developed and manufactured in the late 1950s and 1960s. A total of only 39 were built, of which the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) acquired 12 under the designation CC-106 Yukon and pressed them into service starting in 1961. Due to the chronic shortage of spare parts – a result of the type never entering large-scale production – all CC-106 Yukons were retired from military service by 1970. On advice from Batchelor and with financial support of several investors from the USA, four were acquired by Aerotransportes Entre Rios: the first of them – officially handed over on 13 November 1970 – wore the registration LV-JSY.
