The IAF completed acquisition of its 17 Sikorsky S-65C-3s (‘commercialised’ CH-53C-3s) in July 1971. One was lost to an accident that month. These heavy lift, high utility, turbine-powered helicopters became the principal special forces air transport means, all in nocturnal missions. Aircraft 548 of 118 Squadron has mounts on the aft fuselage for six Israeli-produced smoke canister dispensers and the largely unused aerial refuelling probe. (Artwork by Luca Canossa)
