Wishing to expand its heavy-lift helicopter capacity, the Israelis were fortunate when the USA agreed to covertly provide Sikorsky CH-53C- 3s. Identified as S-65s, aircraft number 33 from 114 Squadron is much as these heavy lift helicopters appeared when delivered to Israel in 1969, without the aerial refuelling nose probe and usually the narrower and longer sponson external fuel tanks. Arriving during the War of Attrition, they were immediately busy with commando raids, troop movements, and vertical replenishment missions. (Artwork by Luca Canossa)
