Israel secretly assembled Mirage 5MJs with the help of Dassault despite the standing French arms embargo. Called the Nesher (Eagle), these were operational by October 1971. They were first fielded by 101 and 117 squadrons. The former unit gained the first ‘kills’ for the type on 1 September 1973 with aircraft 10 and 16 (the latter shown here). The aircraft carries three external tanks and two AIM-9D missiles supporting a patrol mission. (Artwork by Tom Cooper)
