Syria was always a step behind Egypt in the scale of arms purchases and deployed forces owing to a smaller population and budget. An example of measures taken to make the most of what they had was to employ Second World War vintage SU-100 tank destroyers as fixed gun positions. These were partially buried and the engine removed to provide additional 100mm ammunition stowage. They were placed to meet any Israel advance across the Purple Line on the Golan Heights. The profile shows the vehicle prior to its new occupation. (Artwork by David Bocquelet)
