The IDF began a program to upgrade its Centurions to remain competitive on the battlefield and avoid the expensive of buying additional American MBTs. This included adopting the license-produced British 105mm gun with modern ammunition, and re-engining with an American air-cooled diesel, new transmission and improved brakes. Called the Shot-Kal, the gun and revised engine deck is evident in this profile. Also shown is an Israeli-produced commander’s cupola and .50cal machine gun mounted above the main gun.
