The Pluton missile was a nuclear-armed tactical ballistic missile launched from a transporter erector launcher (TEL) based on the chassis of an AMX- 30 tank. Designed to provide the tactical part of the French nuclear deterrence, it was 7m long and weighted 2,423kg on start, and had a range of between 17 and 120 kilometres, with a circular error probable of 150m. as far as is known, it could be equipped either with a warhead of 15kt or 25kt. The Pluton entered service in 1974, and was eventually operated by seven artillery regiments, assigned to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Army Corps’, before the project was terminated in 1993.
