In reaction to the controversy over the fact that Mirage IVAs were on a ‘one-way trip’ when trying to reach some of their targets in the Soviet Union, the Force de Dissuassion decided to purchase 14 Boeing C-135FR tanker aircraft (12 active and 2 spares). Left in the same livery like KC-135As of the Strategic Air Command of the US Air Force – ‘bare metal overall’ – these were operated by ERV.3/93 Bretagne, ERV 4/31 Sologne, and ERV 4/91 Landes, starting from 1971. With their help, Mirage IVAs became capable of reaching targets over 3,500km away. This was the C-135FR 62-3497 (coded 31-CM). (Artwork by Tom Cooper)
