Bayandor-class corvette |
The largest IRIN warships to see action during the first months of the war with Iraq were US-constructed corvettes of the PF-103-class, of which four were in service: Bayandor (81), Naghdi (82), Milanian (83), and Kahnamuie (84). Each of these 83.8m long and 10m wide vessels displaced 900 tons standard, or 1,135 tons at full load, and had a crew of 140. They were equipped with the SPS-6 search radar and SPG-34 fire-control system, and armed with two 3in (76mm) guns, and a quadruple Bofors 40mm automatic cannon. This illustration shows the IRINS Naghdi as of 1980, before the installation of two additional Soviet-made twin 23mm ZU-23 autocannons in place of anti-submarine mortars in 1981. The ship saw very intensive service during September and October 1980: together with Bayandor, she covered the evacuation of Iranian navy vessels from Khorramshahr in mid-September. On 23 September 1980, she was damaged by an Iraqi air strike while in a dry dock in Bushehr. Following quick repairs, IRINS Naghdi was back to sea by mid-October, and involved in escorting caravans to BIK. The ship’s crest is shown inset. (Artwork by Ivan Zajac)
