Officially, between 1971 and 1978, Iran acquired a total of 177 McDonnell-Douglas F-4E Phantom II fighter-bombers (in addition to 32 F-4Ds and 12 RF-4Es). By 1978, all were brought up to the so-called Mod. 556 standard, including leading edge slats for improved manoeuvrability, but only the last 32 received the TISEO telescopic TV-camera sight. This example – US-serial number 71-1115 – belonged to the second batch of 73 F-4Es, delivered between 1974 and 1976. Originally, it received the IIAF serial number 3-686, which in January 1976 was changed to 3-6552, and in 1978 to 3-6551. The aircraft is shown in the markings of TFB.6, recognisable by the Persian number 6 in a black circle, applied on the fin. It is illustrated as armed with AGM-65A Maverick electro-optically guided air-to-ground missiles, and – in the rear wells, under the engines – AIM-7E-2 Sparrow semi-active radar homing, medium-range air-to-air missiles. This jet is known to have been involved in Operation Morvarid. (Artwork by Tom Cooper)
