The second batch of Italian-manufactured ASH-3Ds for Iran – serial numbers 8-2314 to 8-2320 – remained multi-role helicopters and retained their AQS-18 dipping sonar with 360° search capability, the undernose Doppler, and the hoisting winch on the right side of the fuselage: instead of the nose-mounted search radar they had the AN/APS-705 targeting and missile command radar for Marte Mk 2 anti-ship missiles. Unlike the upgraded ASH-3Ds and ASH-3Hs made for the Italian and Peruvian navies, this was installed in a housing under the rear of the cabin. A Marte Mk. 2s is shown inset, for reference purposes, though Iran never received any such weapons: only in the 1990s did the IRINA acquire a batch of their Chinese copies. Sea Kings of this second batch were delivered wearing the classic camouflage pattern of the US Navy: white on the top and sides and gull gray on the undersides. Correspondingly, their maintenance stencils and serials were applied in black – as was the new service title, introduced in 1979. (Artwork by Tom Cooper)
