As with the US cruisers, the Japanese cruisers present represented the effects of the interwar naval limitations treaties. The light cruisers were designed before the treaties existed, while the heavy cruisers were the first generation designed after the first treaty entered force. They were significantly larger and more powerful than the Furitaka/Aoba class designed before the Washington Treaty. The illustration shows (1) Nachi, (2) Tama, and (3) Abukuma.
