The SLA obtained a total of 67 Alvis FV603 Saracen APCs starting in 1984. The type saw intensive deployment during the civil war, when deployed in small detachments, usually consisting of two Saracens and one Saladin. During the first few years of their service Sri Lankan Saracens retained their olive green overall livery, and their primary armament consisting of one Browning M1919 machine gun.
