Lockheed C-141A Starlifters took over many of the support tasks for the larger U-2Rs from the C-124s, as the latter was gradually phased out of service. Their large cargo hold could carry more equipment over longer distances and faster than the C-130s. In the event of a serious fault developing during forward-based operations, the U-2R could be disassembled, mounted on specially designed dolly racks and evacuated by C-141As. Early during their service, all the Starlifters were left in bare metal, with only their fins and rear fuselage painted in light blue-grey. (Artwork by Tom Cooper)
