The Japanese Type 97 carrier torpedo bomber (manufacturer name: Nakajima B5N) was known by the Allied codename “Kate” in Allied (in Japanese: kanjō kōgekiki – literally “carrier attack bomber”; kankō in short). During Operation AL, “Kates” from Ryūjō attacked the most important military targets in Dutch Harbor and provided air reconnaissance. Torpedo bombers from the 2nd Kidō Butai had a good reputation among other pilots, as they participated in successful operations in the Philippines and the Indian Ocean. DI-362 was flown by an unknown wingman. (Artwork by Jean-Marie Guillou)
