The Japanese Type 0 carrier dive bomber (manufacturer name: Mitsubishi A6M2 mod. 21) was also known by the Allied codename “Zero” or “Zeke” (in Japanese: zero shiki kanjō sentōki – kansen or zerosen in short). During Operation AL, “Zeros” from the 2nd Kidō Butai escorted dive and torpedo bombers and strafed the ground military facilities. Ryūjō Zeros’ pilots were considered experienced airmen in 2nd Kidō Butai, and this example, DI-108, was flown by a wingman, PO1c Koga Tadayoshi. (Artwork by Jean-Marie Guillou)
