The British Aerospace Harrier was the primary close air support platform of the Royal Air Force in Germany during the 1980s. This example of a GR.3, from No. 1 Squadron, RAF, is shown with a Matra pod for sixteen 68mm SNEB rockets (which could be equipped with a variety of warhead types) fitted on the outboard pylon and a drop tank on the inboard pylon, and has pods fixed to the lower fuselage carrying two ADEN 30mm cannon and ammunition. The GR.3 had an extended nose equipped with a laser tracker to enable the aircraft to use laser guided bombs, a small number of which were used late in the Falklands conflict. The RAF ordered a total of 118 of the GR.1/GR.3 series of Harriers (with some GR.3s being conversions of earlier GR.1s), the last of which was delivered in 1986. (Artwork by Tom Cooper)
