The British Army maintained a garrison in Berlin throughout the Cold War; the Berlin Infantry Brigade. Following a non-standard organisation, during the 1980s this consisted of three infantry battalions organised and equipped for urban combat. The brigade was supported by a single over-strength squadron of 18 Chieftains. In the mid-1980s the Chieftains, along with some other vehicles of the brigade, adopted an unusual camouflage scheme of brown, white-grey and blue-grey rectangles that proved remarkably effective when stationary in urban areas. Each vehicle had the pattern applied in an identical fashion, in theory making it difficult for observers to identify individual vehicles. (Artwork by David Bocquelet)
