The Chieftain was the successor to the Centurion as the British Army’s MBT. Its L11 120mm gun combined with the .50cal Ranging Gun could accurately engage and destroy most Warsaw Pact armour out to ranges of 1,800m with the L15 APDS ‘Sabot’ round. When upgraded to the Barr and Stroud Tank Laser Sight this range (terrain permitting) could reach 3,200 metres under ideal conditions. Whilst also very well armoured for its day, the Chieftain became notorious for the extraordinarily unreliable L60 multi-fuel engine and its transmission. Though many of these problems were dealt with later in the Chieftain’s service life, it never entirely outgrew this reputation. (Artwork by David Bocquelet)
