The crucial third member of the triad of French combat aircraft deployed in Chad in 19861987 was the Breguet Br.1150 Atlantic. Although designed as an anti-submarine and maritime patrol aircraft, and operated by Aéronavale (French Naval aviation), it was deployed for numerous other roles in Chad, ranging from makeshift early warning aircraft to ELINT/SIGINT-gatherer. Camouflage colours consisted of azure blue on top surfaces and flat white on lower surfaces and sides, while national insignia was worn in four positions only. Most Atlantics deployed in 1986 and 1987 were drawn from the Flottille 23F, but were manned by different crews, including those from Flottille 22F and 23F. While all regularly carried Barracuda ECM-pods for self-defence, installed under the port wing, serial number 53 was one of two aircraft from the 23F (the other was 67) known to have been modified to deploy AS.37 Martel anti-radar missiles in 1987. Inset are the insignia of 21F (left) and 23F.
