The most powerful offensive weapon in the LAAF arsenal of the 1980s were Tupolev Tu-22 bombers, 14 of which entered service with the al- Jufra/Hun-based Bomber Squadron in 1977. All were camouflaged in colours shown here, in olive green and dark green (exact shades remain unknown) on top surfaces and sides, while undersides were left in natural metal. National insignia was applied in six positions: until 1977, it consisted of the pan-Arabic tricolore (see upper inset), and later of the Libyan green markings. None of the aircraft is known to have worn any kind of usual serials, but it is possible that the last two of their construction number were applied on the cover for the front undercarriage bay. The insets at the bttom of the profile show the usual colours of FAB-1500 bombs (1,500kg calibre), which represented the main weapon of this type in Libyan service. (Tom Cooper)
