The Soviet-designed ZPU series of anti-aircraft machineguns (zenitnaya pulemotnaya ustanovka, or “anti-aircraft machinegun mount”) first entered service immediately following the Second World War. All ZPU variants used the 14.5mm KPV heavy machinegun (krupnokaliberniy pulemyot Vladimirova, or “Vladimir’s large-calibre machinegun”), which could engage aerial targets out to an effective range of 1,400 metres. The ZPU-1 mounted a single KPV capable of firing 600 rounds per minute. (Artwork by David Bocquelet)
