By mid-1964 the PAIGC began using the Soviet-designed 12.7mm DShK (Degtyaryova-Shpagina Krupnokaliberny or “Degtyaryova-Shpagina largecalibre”) anti-aircraft machinegun. First fielded by the USSR in 1938, the DShK has since gone on to serve in the armed forces of over 100 nations and insurgent groups. With an effective anti-air range of 1,000 metres, the DShK proved a deadly threat during the 1954 siege of Dien Bien Phu and against American aircraft overflying the Ho Chi Minh Trail traversing Laos, Cambodia, and South Vietnam. In Guinea, PAIGC DShK fire brought down a FAP G.91 in July 1968 and damaged several other aircraft throughout the war. (Artwork by David Bocquelet)
