Thirty-eight General Motors Fox armoured cars, produced in Canada during the Second World War, were supplied to Portugal in 1957. Their Browning 7.62mm coaxial machine guns were replaced by 7.92mm calibre weapons, and at the end of 1959 the first reconnaissance squadron of eight Fox vehicles was activated for service in Guinea. Despite its relative obsolescence the Fox proved reliable and robust, qualities much appreciated by Portuguese Army personnel. The Fox reconnaissance squadron assigned to Guinea was installed at Bafatá, and these vehicles were used to great tactical effect in notable actions throughout the territory.
