While left in silver grey overall, starting in 1964, many Syrian MiG-21F-13s had large parts of their forward fuselage and rudders painted in red, according to the UAC order. Some seem to have also had wingtips painted in red. According to the practice introduced once they entered service in 1963–1964, they had no roundels at all: these were applied on top and bottom wing surfaces only. Clear photographic confirmation of their serials remain unavailable, but the latest reports from Syrian sources indicate that they were in the range 401–499. Standard armament was the same as that of Egyptian and Iraqi examples and included one 30mm gun and a pair of R-3S air-to-air missiles. (Artwork by Tom Cooper)
