Nominally, the first flight of Ouragans from No. 113 Squadron to reach their target was the one led by Ran Alon, tasked with striking Meliz AB (better known as ‘Bir Gifgafa’) in north-eastern Sinai. After achieving complete surprise and successfully cratering the runway with bombs, the four jets turned to attack four MiG-21F-13s from No. 45 Squadron which attempted to scramble. Two MiGs were destroyed by gunfire before they could lift-off, but the other two managed to get airborne: one was shot down immediately after, while the other either flew away (according to the Israeli version) or engaged the Ouragans in an air combat (according to the Egyptian version). The Number 3 of No. 113 Squadron’s flight was the Ouragan serial number 86 piloted by David Yariv with: according to the Israelis, this jet crashed either into an Egyptian jet that was trying to take-off, or into an enemy air defence position.
