One of the least-known, but most important air strikes during the first wave of Operation Focus included four flights of No. 147 Squadron’s CM.170 Magisters tasked with striking Egyptian radar stations in Sinai. Armed with 68mm and 80mm unguided rockets installed underwing and internally installed 7.62mm machine guns, they knocked out P-8 radar stations in el-Arish, Bir Lahfan, and Jebel Hof without losses in return. However, this jet – piloted by Arnon Livnat, leader of one of the flights – was felled by Egyptian air defences in the Jiradi area, while on the way back to Israel. The majority of CM.170s of the IDF/AF were painted in brown (RAL8008) and blue (RAL5008) on upper surfaces and sides, and undersurface grey (RAL7044) on undersurfaces. Their orange self-adhesive stripes usually applied on the nose, wingtip fuel tanks, and butterfly fins were all removed shortly before the war. (Artwork by Tom Cooper)
