Except for their cockpit and fin, MiG-21PFMs of the UARAF differed very little from earlier MiG-21F-13s and MiG-21FLs: they were still delivered in silver grey overall, and wore the usual set of roundels in six positions, and fin flashes. Two black identification stripes were applied around the rear fuselage, and three around the wingtips. Serials were relatively small, and in the range 5401–5499. This jet – serial number 5440 – was operated by No. 26 Squadron from Abu Suweir AB: the UARAF unit that managed to scramble the highest number of its interceptors in reaction to the Israeli onslaught. Two of these, flown by Asim Ghazi and Awad Hamdi, caused the loss of two SMB.2s of No. 105 Squadron as these were returning from the opening strike on Kabrit AB. (Artwork by Tom Cooper)
