MiG-19Ss acquired by Egypt and Iraq in 1959–1961 were all painted in satin ‘air superiority grey’ colour overall, and wore the national insignia in the usual positions (including six roundels and fin flashes). The 56 jets originally delivered to Egypt are known to have worn serials in the range 3001 to 3099. In 1964, when No. 20 ‘Araba’ Squadron was created through re-grouping all of the surviving Egyptian MiG- 19S and aircraft donated by Iraq, many of its aircraft received the names of major Arab cities applied in white below the cockpit. Recently discovered photographs indicate that the ex-Iraqi examples also received four-digit serial numbers applied in black on the forward fuselage: most likely, these were in the range 3101–3199. This is a reconstruction of an Egyptian example with identification stripes and the name ‘Qahira’ (Cairo). (Artwork by Tom Cooper)
