In 1958, the UARAF established an aerobatic team including six, and later nine, MiG-17s. All the jets were decorated with chequerboards on their rudders, mostly applied in red: at least two had these (and their wingtips) painted in blue instead. The MiG-17Fs flown by the team retained this livery when they received two launch rails for Sakr unguided missiles under each wingtip, and were then temporarily deployed to Yemen in 1963–1966, and after their overhauls at Helwan in 1966. The result was the appearance illustrated in this example – serial number 2235 – which was destroyed on the ground in el-Arish by two successive flights of Ouragans that attacked this base on the morning of 5 June 1967.
