While F-15s and F-16s of the USAF and European allies flew most of the sorties during Operation Deny Flight, and then played the dominant role during Operation Deliberate Force, F/A-18 Hornet-equipped units of the US Marine Corps and the Spanish Air Force also became involved. The VMFA(AW)-533 Hawks flew Deny Flight missions in 1993, followed by VMFA-251 Thunderbolts and VMFA(AW)-332 Polka Dots, in 1994 and 1995. By September 1995, it was the turn of VMFA(AW)-224 Bengals to deploy 12 of its jets at Aviano AB. One of these is depicted here, together with typical weapons load: this usually consisted of a single AGM-88 HARM under the left wing and one GBU-12 laser-guided bomb (inset, bottom left) under the right wing. Thanks to the AN/AAS-38 Nite Hawk Forward Looking Infra-Red and laser designator pod (inset, bottom centre), the aircraft could designate targets for its own weapons or those of other aircraft.
