Aircraft of the British Royal Navy saw participation in both operations Deny Flight and Deliberate Force. HMS Ark Royal undertook an Adriatic Sea cruise with Sea Harrier FRS.Mk 1s of Naval Air Squadron (NAS) 801 aboard in 1993, and again in 1994. In July 1995, HMS Invincible arrived carrying the much upgraded Sea Harrier F/A.Mk 2s of NAS 800. This illustration shows a Sea Harrier FRS.Mk 1 from NAS 801 at the time it was shot down, on 15 April 1995. A veteran of the Falklands War, this jet was painted in dark sea grey (BS381C/638, FS16173) overall and, in addition to national insignia in six positions and the unit insignia on the fin, wore the tactical number 001 on the fairing forwards of the front jet nozzle, and the serial XZ498 on the ventral fin under the tail. Standard armament consisted of AIM-9M Sidewinder missiles carried on outboard underwing pylons: sometimes, a single 1,000lbs/454kg bomb was attached under the centreline. (Artwork by Tom Cooper)
