During 1992, Croatia ‘acquired’ its first three MiG-21bis through defections of pilots of the JRV i PVO. All retained their livery in ‘air superiority grey’ overall, but received prominent Croat insignia. As well as the national tri-colore (applied over that of Yugoslavia across the fin), they included the crest of No. 1 (later: No. 21) Squadron, HRZ. Serial numbers 102 and 103 also received ‘personal names’ in the form of crests of the towns of Dubrovnik (102) and Vukovar (illustrated here on 103), accompanied by the word ‘Osvetnik’ (Avenger). Furthermore, the small white insignia on the dielectric antenna-cover on the fin denoted the Zmaj Works: the facility at which this aircraft was last overhauled. Standard armament of early Croat MiG-21bis aircraft consisted of FAB-250M-54 bombs (illustrated here) and UB-16-57 pods for S-5K 57mm unguided rockets. A few BL.755 CBUs were obtained with the help of Bosniaks from former stocks of the JRV i PVO at Bihać AB. (Artwork by Tom Cooper)
