On its establishment in 1992, the 27th Fighter-Bomber Aviation Squadron of the 92nd Mixed Aviation Brigade, V i PVO was equipped with a total of 13 J-22 Orao fighter-bombers and NJ-22 Orao two-seat conversion trainers. At least two of J-22s – including the example illustrated here, serial number 25173 – were compatible with the most potent weapon in the arsenal of this type: US-made AGM-65B Maverick electro-optically guided missiles, one of which is illustrated as installed under the outboard underwing pylon. Other weaponry in the arsenal of the J-22 is illustrated at the bottom and included (from left to right) 200kg bombs of French design; FAB-250-270 bombs of Soviet design, L57-17MD pods for unguided 57mm rockets, and British made Hunting BL.755 CBUs. As usual for the type, all aircraft were camouflaged in dark sea grey and dark green on top surfaces and sides, and PRU blue on undersurfaces: notable on the forward fuselage is the fresh coat of dark green used to cover the ‘last three’ of the serial number, applied in late 1991.
